SASSA Grant Review: Why Your Payment Is Pending and What to Do
A SASSA grant review is a check that you still qualify for your grant. If your payment is late, pending or paid on the fourth payment day, you may be under review. This guide to the SASSA review process in South Africa shows you how to check your review status, what to take to the office, how to complain and how to fix a suspended grant.

What is the SASSA grant review process?
People also call it the SASSA review process. SASSA says it reviews grants every year. It checks things like your income, address and bank details. Some beneficiaries also need eLife certification, which proves you are alive and still collecting.
A review is not a cancellation. Most people keep their grant after they hand in the right documents. The risk comes from ignoring the notice. SASSA suspended about 70,000 social grants through its review programme. This saves the government roughly R44 million a month, or about R500 million a year.
Any grant type can be flagged: Older Persons, Disability and children’s grants. Read our guide to SASSA biometric verification if your notice mentions an identity check.
How to check your SASSA review status
- Read every SMS or review letter sent to the number and address linked to your grant.
- Send a WhatsApp message to 082 601 0111 and ask if you were chosen for a review or life certification.
- Call 0800 60 10 11 with your ID number ready.
- If you changed your number or have no phone, visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID.
- For SRD R370, log in at srd.sassa.gov.za. SRD statuses work differently, as explained below.
Many people never received a message. Civil groups such as Black Sash have said some beneficiaries only found out after payment stopped. If your payment did not arrive in the normal three-day cycle, assume you may be under review and ask SASSA.
Under review, suspended, lapsed or cancelled: what is the difference?
| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Under review | SASSA is checking your eligibility. Payment may be late. | Reply to the notice and visit the office with your documents. |
| Paid on the fourth day | You were paid a few days late. You are not suspended. | Complete the review before your next payment cycle. |
| Suspended | Payment stopped, for example after a missed review or three months of not collecting. | Apply for restoration within 30 days. |
| Lapsed or cancelled | The grant ended after you did not comply, or you no longer qualify. | Ask SASSA which route applies, then reapply or appeal. |
SASSA staff and media use these words loosely. Ask the official for the exact status on your record.
Why the SASSA review process causes confusion
Many beneficiaries only learn about a review when their money does not arrive. Black Sash says bulk SMS messages do not reach people in rural areas or people without phones. SASSA itself said some beneficiaries were unfamiliar with the fourth payment day and worried when they were not paid in the normal cycle. If you are unsure, ask SASSA for your exact status and keep the reference number.
SASSA fourth payment day explained
Last updated: 05 November 2026
SASSA introduced the fourth day so reviewed beneficiaries are paid without disrupting the normal three-day cycle. SASSA’s own notice says you should visit your nearest office to complete the review after you are paid. SASSA Gauteng told media that people should finish before the 18th of the following month.
The fourth day also covers eLife certification. The next one is Monday, 07 December 2026. See every date on our SASSA payment dates page.
Documents to take to your SASSA review
- Your South African ID (smart card or green barcoded book)
- Proof of address, such as a utility bill or letter from your ward councillor
- Three months of bank statements or other proof of income
- Your bank account details
- Marriage, divorce or death certificates, where they apply
- Medical evidence for a Disability Grant
- A court order for a Foster Child Grant
Take originals and one set of copies, and ask the official whether any copies need certifying.
SASSA review process for child grants
For a child grant, the caregiver is the person reviewed. Take your own ID, the child’s birth certificate and the documents your notice lists.
How to complete the SASSA review process step by step
- Read the notice and note the deadline.
- Collect your documents from the list above.
- Arrive early on a weekday, because offices get busy at month end.
- Hand in everything and ask for a stamped receipt or reference number.
- Write down the date and the official’s name.
- Check your payment on the next payment date.
If you cannot travel, ask SASSA whether a procurator can help you. Never pay anyone to “fast-track” a review.
Can you do the SASSA grant review online?
Not yet for most people. SASSA’s CEO said the agency will make reviews available on self-service platforms step by step. Until then, expect to visit an office, and only use sassa.gov.za for any online step.
What if you missed your SASSA grant review?
Missing a review does not end your grant on its own. SASSA can suspend payment if you do not give the information it asked for, and the law lets you apply to restore the grant afterwards. The longer you wait, the more payments you may miss.
- Find the date on your SMS or letter and count the days that have passed.
- Visit the office with your ID and documents.
- Ask whether your grant is under review or suspended.
- If it is suspended, start the restoration application the same day.

How long do you have to respond to a SASSA review?
Last updated: 05 November 2026
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| SMS notices (Daily Maverick, 24 August 2026) | Usually 30 days to respond. SASSA has said up to 90 days before a grant lapses. |
| Social Development reply to Parliament | Up to 60 days to review while still paid. Then suspension and a further 30-day notice. |
| Social Assistance Act regulations | SASSA may suspend within 30 days of notifying you if you do not give the information. |
SASSA grant review and suspension: how to reinstate your grant
- Visit your nearest SASSA office as soon as you learn of the suspension.
- Ask for the restoration application and fill it in.
- Hand in your ID and every document SASSA requests.
- Keep your reference number and follow up by phone on 0800 60 10 11.
If SASSA confirms you qualify, it can restore the grant from the date it was suspended. The Social Development Department told Parliament that eligible beneficiaries get full back pay.
Note that the published regulation refers to 30 working days, while SASSA’s statements say 30 days. Apply immediately and do not test the limit.
If SASSA says you no longer qualify
You can appeal to the Independent Tribunal within 90 days of the decision. Our guides on SASSA appeals and checking your appeal status explain the steps.
Grant approved but not paid: what to check
- Wrong date: SASSA moves dates around holidays. Confirm on the payment dates page.
- Open review: You may be due on the fourth payment day.
- Bank details: A closed account or new card can block payment.
- Uncollected cash: Not collecting for more than three months can lead to suspension.
Call 0800 60 10 11 if none of these fit. If you are short in the meantime, read good debt vs bad debt before you borrow. Avoid unregistered lenders.
SASSA grant review complaints and your rights
